Port Vila, Vanuatu – Tuesday 16 June 2026: The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) and the Ministry of Health are progressing discussions on the integration of the Vanuatu College of Nursing Education (VCNE) into NUV as the future School of Medicine and Health Science.

The initiative reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to strengthen higher education and health workforce development in Vanuatu. Discussions have focused on the Ministry’s priorities and the importance of coordinated collaboration, with both parties preparing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will establish the foundation for advancing the integration process.

NUV’s Vice Chancellor, Mr Jean Pierre Nirua, welcomed the progress made between the two institutions.

“The National University of Vanuatu was established to develop highly skilled and qualified Ni-Vanuatu professionals who can contribute meaningfully to our nation’s future. The integration of the Vanuatu College of Nursing Education strongly aligns with NUV’s vision of becoming a centre of excellence for higher education and research that responds to national priorities. Establishing a School of Medicine and Health Science will help strengthen and boost the development of our health sector while ensuring that future generations of health professionals receive relevant academic and practical training locally in Vanuatu, to support our country and its people. NUV is committed to working with the new Minister of Health, who has emphasised the need for training in his first statement as Minister.”

The proposed School of Medicine and Health Science will contribute to building a stronger and more sustainable national health system by providing quality education and professional pathways for Ni-Vanuatu health practitioners. It also aligns with NUV’s mission to deliver relevant, accessible and internationally recognised education that supports the social and economic development of Vanuatu.

The Ministry of Health highlighted the importance of investing in the country’s health workforce. The development of Vanuatu depends on the strength and quality of its people. Reinforcing the qualifications and professional training of the health workforce is essential to improving healthcare services and supporting national development. Integrating the Vanuatu College of Nursing Education into NUV represents an important step in building a highly skilled cadre of Ni-Vanuatu health professionals who will serve communities across the country and contribute to the long-term prosperity of Vanuatu.

The Ministry of Health and NUV reaffirm their commitment to working together to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative and to create new opportunities for education, research and professional development in the health sector.
