Port Vila, Vanuatu – Thursday 16 July 2026: The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the National University of Samoa (NUS) and the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), strengthening academic cooperation and regional partnership with these national universities.
The MoUs build on the successful discussions by NUV’s Vice-Chancellor Nirua with both universities last year and earlier this year to deepen collaboration in higher education, research and institutional development. The agreements formalise the shared commitment to advancing Pacific-led solutions to regional challenges through education, research and knowledge exchange.
The five-year partnerships provide a framework for collaboration in key areas including staff and student mobility, joint research initiatives, curriculum development, academic exchanges, conferences and workshops, and the sharing of expertise and resources. Priority areas of cooperation include climate change, sustainable agriculture and environmental management, Pacific Studies and the preservation of traditional knowledge, foundation programme development, and academic and research networking.
The partnerships strongly align with NUV’s vision of becoming a leading University that advances knowledge and innovation for the sustainable development of Vanuatu and the Pacific. They also support the University’s mission to deliver quality higher education, foster research excellence, strengthen international cooperation, and contribute to national and regional development through teaching, learning and lifelong education.
For NUV students, the MoUs will create valuable opportunities for academic exchange, cultural immersion, internships and broader learning experiences across the Pacific. Academic and professional staff will benefit from collaborative teaching, research partnerships and professional development opportunities, while the institutions will work together to produce research that addresses shared regional priorities and supports evidence-based solutions for Pacific communities.
NUV’s Vice-Chancellor, Mr Jean-Pierre Nirua, highlighted the importance of strengthening links with universities in the Pacific region. The MoUs also reinforce the important role of Pacific national universities in building regional resilience, preserving cultural heritage and developing locally driven responses to contemporary challenges. NUV reaffirms its commitment to supporting sustainable development and academic excellence while serving the needs of communities.
