Port Vila, Vanuatu – Monday 27 April 2026: The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr Candice Cabane as Head of its School of Science, marking an important step in the University’s continued growth and commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and national development.

Dr Candice Cabane brings with her a deep-rooted passion for science and education, shaped by a childhood spent exploring diverse environments across multiple countries. “As a child, I was always amazed by the world around me and wanted to understand it better,” she explains. This curiosity led her to pursue advanced studies in molecular biology, culminating in a PhD, followed by a career in research and university teaching in France.

However, it was her arrival in Vanuatu as a secondary school teacher that proved transformative. Inspired by the country’s rich environment and the enthusiasm of its students, she chose to invest long-term in education and collaborative projects. Today, her appointment reflects both her professional expertise and her strong connection to the country.

“Joining the National University of Vanuatu represents a unique opportunity to contribute to scientific development in a dynamic island context, while supporting the next generation of scientists,” she says. “My career has taught me that passing on knowledge is essential, but that it is students who give true meaning to our work.”

The University, still young and rapidly evolving, sees this appointment as a strategic move to strengthen its School of Science and reinforce its mission to deliver relevant, high-quality education aligned with the needs of Vanuatu and the wider Pacific region.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Pascal Michon, warmly welcomed Dr Cabane. He said. “We are delighted to welcome Dr Candice Cabane to the National University of Vanuatu. Her international academic background, combined with her experience in Vanuatu, makes her uniquely positioned to lead our School of Science. She will be instrumental in shaping the development of our programs and in strengthening the scientific skills that are vital for the future of Vanuatu.”

In her new role, Dr Cabane is particularly motivated by the opportunity to make a tangible impact. She aims to strengthen connections between science education and local challenges, especially environmental issues, while expanding regional and international partnerships. Her leadership approach is grounded in listening, trust, and collaboration, with a strong emphasis on the well-being of both students and staff.

“My first impressions have been extremely positive,” she notes. “There is a wonderful energy among students and a strong commitment from staff. Building on this foundation is key to developing meaningful and sustainable projects.”

Beyond her professional work, Dr Cabane’s personal connection to nature and the marine environment plays an important role in her vision. A long-time diver, she brings a deep sensitivity to environmental challenges, which informs both her teaching and her strategic outlook.

Looking ahead, her ambition is clear: “I want to make the School of Science a recognised centre of excellence, rooted in the realities of Vanuatu and open to the world. By valuing local skills, fostering collaboration, and embracing innovation, we can contribute directly to the sustainable development of the region.”

This appointment underscores the NUV’s commitment to nurturing talent, advancing knowledge, and building a future where education and research play a central role in the country’s development.
