Port Vila, Vanuatu – Friday 31 July 2026: The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) was honoured this week to welcome His Excellency Dr José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for a special public lecture on “Peacebuilding and National Reconciliation” in the NUV auditorium.

Addressing students, staff, government representatives and guests, President Ramos-Horta shared powerful reflections on Timor-Leste’s journey towards independence, peace and national reconciliation. Drawing on his decades of leadership and diplomacy, he emphasised that lasting nation-building is founded on unity, dialogue, forgiveness, strong institutions and visionary leadership. He encouraged young people to pursue knowledge with integrity, humility and compassion, reminding the audience that sustainable peace is built not only through political agreements but also through education, mutual respect and the collective commitment of citizens to work together for the common good.

The lecture provided a unique opportunity for NUV students to engage directly with one of the world’s most respected statesmen and peace advocates. It offered invaluable insights into leadership, resilience and reconciliation while inspiring the next generation of Pacific leaders.

NUV’s Vice-Chancellor, Mr Jean-Pierre Nirua, said the visit reflected the University’s commitment to providing students with meaningful opportunities to learn from global leaders.

“It was a great privilege for the National University of Vanuatu to host His Excellency Dr. José Ramos-Horta. His remarkable journey and message of peace, reconciliation and visionary leadership have inspired our students and the wider University community. This visit not only enriched the learning experience of our students but also strengthened the enduring friendship between Vanuatu and Timor-Leste, reinforcing the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity across the Pacific.”

The visit was especially significant as Vanuatu celebrates its 46th Independence Anniversary. It highlighted the value of deeper partnerships, mutual learning and cooperation across the Pacific and Southeast Asia.

NUV extends its sincere gratitude to His Excellency Dr. José Ramos-Horta and the members of his delegation for sharing their wisdom and experiences with the University community. NUV also thanks all government representatives, partners, staff, students and invited guests whose participation made the event a memorable and inspiring occasion.
