Port Vila, Vanuatu – Monday 8 June 2026: On Friday 5 June, students and lecturers from the National University of Vanuatu (NUV) joined forces to conduct a clean-up initiative at the NUV School of Education on the Kawenu Campus in Malapoa, marking World Environment Day and demonstrating the institution’s commitment to ecological stewardship.
The University congratulated all students and staff who participated in the initiative. Their collective efforts not only helped maintain a clean and healthy campus environment but also contributed to the broader national goal of keeping Vanuatu clean, green, and sustainable for future generations.
The collective action aligns directly with NUV’s strategic vision and core goals, which place sustainable development and environmental care at the heart of higher education. For NUV, safeguarding the environment is not merely an academic topic but a key institutional responsibility. As Vanuatu advances, NUV advocates that national development must firmly go hand-in-hand with environmental protection to ensure a resilient future for the archipelago.
Dr Candice Cabane, Head of the School of Sciences at the National University of Vanuatu, emphasised the deeper meaning behind today’s community engagement. She said, “At the National University of Vanuatu, our values are not just taught; they are translated into actions. Our students and the wider NUV community put these principles into practice. By actively engaging in the preservation of our campus and surrounding ecosystems, our students learn that true leadership and citizenship require tangible responsibility toward our environment.”
This clean-up marked the official launch of NUV’s Environment Month. Throughout the next few weeks, the University will host various educational and practical activities designed to engage students, staff, and the public in green initiatives.
NUV’s Environment Month calendar also includes an environmental picture contest, a slam and poetry contest, an environmental pop-up cinema, the screening of Wall-E with NUV Movie Club and compost-making activities. All updates and schedules for these Environment Month initiatives are being announced across NUV’s official social media channels.
