Port Vila, Vanuatu – Monday 23 February 2026: The Digital Research Portal (Portail Numérique de Recherche in French) of the National University of Vanuatu (NUV) is transforming the way knowledge about Vanuatu is preserved, shared and developed. Created as part of the Centre for Digital Resources and Documentation, the Digital Research Portal is a major step forward in strengthening research, learning and academic collaboration in Vanuatu.
Researchers in Vanuatu identified an urgent challenge: research produced about Vanuatu was scattered across institutions, often difficult to access, and sometimes at risk of being lost due to the country’s exposure to natural disasters. Without adequate digital infrastructure, valuable scientific knowledge could disappear.
In response, between 2020 and 2022, the University, in partnership with the French Embassy in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie and the Government of New Caledonia, launched the Digital Research Portal with the support of the French Embassy in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, the Government of New Caledonia, and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). The goal was ambitious yet essential: to create a national, multidisciplinary, bilingual (English and French) open-access database dedicated to scientific publications related to Vanuatu.
An Incredible Resource for Students
Today, the Digital Research Portal stands as an incredible resource for NUV students—especially master’s students and doctoral candidates. It offers free, centralised access to thousands of scientific documents, including articles, reports and research papers focused on Vanuatu and the Pacific region.
For students, this means:
- Easier access to reliable academic sources
- Stronger support for assignments, dissertations and theses
- Greater visibility for their own research work
- Opportunities to contribute to the growing body of national knowledge
The Portal follows the FAIR principles – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable – ensuring that research outputs are not only available but structured for long-term use and sharing. Technically, it relies on the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), which allows it to connect with international repositories and other research databases.
The NUV Administrator of the Digital Research Portal, Mr Lino Linsare, highlights the importance of the Digital Research Portal for students and research purposes. He said, “The Digital Research Portal gives our students direct access to the scientific heritage of Vanuatu. It empowers them not only to learn from past research but also to contribute to it. Through the Portal, they become part of a living academic community connected to the Pacific and the world.”
A Living, Growing Platform
Since its first phase of digitisation in 2021 – when nearly 1,000 documents were archived following a national call for contributions – the Portal has grown significantly. In 2022, an automatic harvesting function was added, allowing the system to collect metadata from other compliant platforms. Today, more than 5,000 records are available.
The Portal operates as both a continuous-flow system, regularly updated with new references, and as a bridge connecting local research with regional and global scientific networks. It centralises research produced in Vanuatu while also integrating relevant international publications.
Officially launched on 25 October 2022 during the FALAH (Family Farming, Lifestyle and Health) workshop held on the NUV campus, the Digital Research Portal represents much more than a database. It embodies the University’s commitment to open science and knowledge-sharing.
The Digital Research Portal welcomes submissions from researchers, doctoral candidates and government or public institutions conducting research related to Vanuatu and the Pacific region. This ongoing call for contributions is essential to ensure the continuous growth, visibility and long-term preservation of national research outputs. By depositing their work, contributors actively strengthen Vanuatu’s open research ecosystem and enhance the international visibility of locally produced knowledge.
Building a National Research Culture
Beyond its technical achievements, the Digital Research Portal plays a strategic role in democratising access to knowledge. In a context where many international journals remain behind paywalls, it reduces inequalities in access to information and strengthens intellectual sovereignty.
It preserves the country’s scientific memory, promotes bilingual dissemination, and fosters a culture of documentation and research excellence. At the same time, it highlights important challenges such as digital sustainability, data security and long-term infrastructure management.
As one of the first structured documentary initiatives in Vanuatu, the Digital Research Portal positions NUV at the heart of the nation’s scientific development. More than a tool, it is a cornerstone of an emerging national research ecosystem – open, visible and built for future generations – accessible on https://portal.univ.edu.vu/en.
