Port-Vila, Vanuatu – Wednesday 15 October 2025: The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry & Biosecurity (MALFB) formalised their partnership to enhance agricultural education and research in Vanuatu, especially by supporting the integration of the Vanuatu Agriculture College into NUV and fostering joint research initiatives with the Vanuatu Agriculture Research and Technical Centre.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding represents a significant milestone in strengthening the ties between educational institutions and government entities in Vanuatu. Agriculture is a vital sector, contributing approximately 25% to the national GDP and employing over 70% of the population. Vanuatu Agriculture College will be integrated with NUV to continue enhancing educational opportunities and empowering the next generation of agricultural leaders.
Students will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that merges theoretical knowledge with practical experiences, equipping them for successful careers in agriculture and related fields. The integration of the Vanuatu Agriculture College into NUV will enable students to engage in innovative research and development. Furthermore, this collaboration will bolster capacity building in Vanuatu, ensuring that local farmers and agricultural professionals acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for improved productivity and sustainability.
Joint research projects with the Vanuatu Agriculture Research and Technical Centre will tackle critical issues such as crop resilience, sustainable farming practices, and food security, addressing the unique challenges faced by the agricultural sector in Vanuatu.
NUV’s Vice Chancellor, Mr Jean-Pierre Nirua, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. He said, “This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for NUV. By working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry & Biosecurity and merging our resources, we are enhancing the learning experience for our students and potential farmers and entrepreneurs, addressing the employment gaps in key productive sectors while contributing to the sustainable development of Vanuatu’s agricultural and related sectors, including trade and agri-tourism. Together, we can build a resilient future for our farmers, communities, provinces and country.”
NUV is dedicated to fostering innovation and excellence in education and training, and this partnership with MALFB reflects that commitment. Together, we are ready to make a lasting impact on the agricultural landscape of Vanuatu, considering the very rich soils and biodiversity that our Vanuatu land generally offers.
