Port-Vila, Vanuatu – Friday 3 January 2025: The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) extends its warmest wishes to the people of Vanuatu and beyond for a prosperous New Year 2025. As this new year begins amidst a general sense of unsettlement within our Port-Vila city following the magnitude 7.3 earthquake of 17th December 2024, renewed optimism and determination guide our efforts to continue advancing education and innovation to the service of our children and nation of Vanuatu.

“It is with much relief and cause for gratitude that I announce that the facilities of the National University of Vanuatu did not sustain serious structural damage following the earthquake that hit the capital Port-Vila and Efate island last December 2024,” Vice-Chancellor Jean-Pierre Nirua said. Minor damage caused to furniture, IT, learning resources and other equipment will be addressed to ensure the full operation of both the NUV main campus and the Kawenu campus in the coming weeks. This fortunate situation ensures that campuses remain fully operational, ready to welcome students, faculty, and staff for another promising academic year.

With the New Year come new opportunities to shape the future of our students and staff. Vice-Chancellor Nirua added, “I am pleased to announce that in coming weeks, NUV will recruit over 30 ex-VITE academic staff into its effective workforce at the School of Education, and depending on their professional qualifications and workloads, they may also be able to teach subjects across other schools within NUV”. NUV invites prospective students to enrol in a diverse range of programmes designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed for employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in key sectors. Registration for pre-enrolled students begins on Monday 20th January 2025 at the NUV’s main campus, while registration at the School of Education will be rolled out in February 2025. Separate announcements will be made to the benefit of the students and the general public.

“Education is the foundation for a brighter future,” said Vice-Chancellor Nirua. “I encourage potential students to explore the opportunity to join the National University of Vanuatu and be part of the journey towards personal, professional and national development.” Whether your interest lies in business, technology, education, sciences, climate reliance or tourism, NUV offers a pathway to achieve goals and contribute meaningfully to the development of Vanuatu.

Looking ahead, NUV reaffirms its commitment to resilience, growth and excellence. In 2025, efforts will focus on consolidating the capacity of our academia, developing and strengthening programs of study in partnerships with national and international organizations. These collaborations are integral to expanding opportunities for students and enhancing the university’s capacity to serve the development needs of our beloved country and the broader Pacific region.

As the New Year is celebrated, the resilience and unity of the people of Vanuatu are also celebrated. NUV remains steadfast in its mission to empower individuals through education and training, so they become innovative and transformative pillars of sustainable development for our nation. The NUV community looks forward to growing and welcoming new staff members and students in 2025. Let this year be one of growth for the university and emancipation and achievement for all staff and students.
